2006 REBL vs. TVMSBL ALL-STAR GAMES RECAP

REBL 45+ Federal League - 4, TV 45+ National - 4

The 45+ FL All-Stars rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth but were unable to score again in a defensive battle that ended in a 4-4 tie after 10 innings at Sonoma State. Crushers Steve Solis and Rob Catelli had two hits apiece, including run scoring singles that tied the score in the eighth.

Starting pitcher Ed Coulteaux pitched masterfully, allowing just one earned run in 5 innings. David Charp threw two shutout innings, and closer Dennis McCroskey retired the last 9 batters in order to preserve the tie. Supporting the outstanding pitching was great defense, particularly excellent plays executed by Mark Rudiger, Jim Hurt, Craig Sheffer, and Allan Green.

REBL 35+ National League - 5, TV 35+ National - 4

Game MVP Scott Lemon of the Pirates threw five shutout innings in relief and the REBL 35+ All-Stars came back from a 4-0 deficit to beat the TVMSBL 35+ All-Stars.  REBL starter Bob Bowman battled the midday heat as Tri-Valley built a 4-0 lead after four innings.  But in the bottom of the 4th, the REBL team woke up as Jimmy Hemphill (Rangers) and Malcolm Jordan (Blacksox) each had run-scoring singles to cut the Tri-Valley lead to 4-2.  Lemon then started the fifth inning and held the Tri-Valley team at bay, as the REBL chipped away at the lead again in the bottom of the 7th.  Lemon led off the inning with a walk and then stole second.  A wild pitch moved him to third and he scored on an error on the Tri-Valley second baseman, cutting the lead to one run at 4-3.  He then went back to work on the mound, putting up two more scoreless innings as the game moved to the bottom of the 9th with REBL still trailing by a run.  Rick Cantor (Pirates) led off the inning with a walk, representing the tying run.  The next two REBL batters struck out, bringing up Lemon with two outs.  The game looked to be over as he bounced a routine grounder to third, and the Tri-Valley 3rd baseman field the ball cleanly and went the short way to second.  But, he short-armed the throw into the dirt and Cantor was safe on the error.  Rusty Taylor (Tigers) then slapped a high hopper to short, but the speedy Taylor easily beat the throw for an infield single and the REBL had the bases loaded with two outs and the winning run at second.  Mike Brennan (Pirates) was the batter and he grounded a single past the outstretched glove of the Tri-Valley shortstop, as Cantor and Lemon scored and the REBL rally for a thrilling 5-4 win.  Lemon was the winning pitcher, going shutout 5 innings, allowing just 3 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 5 batters.  The opportunistic REBL team totaled just 7 hits, but worked 8 walks to gain the win.

TV 25+ National - 10, REBL 25+ National League - 8

The REBL 25+ All Stars outscored the Tri-Valley All Stars 8-3 for the last eight innings.  However, a seven run 1st inning by Tri-Valley had proved to be the deciding factor.  The REBL 25+ All Stars lost 10-8.  The hitting leader was Wayne Chinapen (Pirates) who blasted two 2-run home runs.  Chris Cerda (Pirates) settled in after the 1st inning to give up only five more hits through seven innings to keep Tri-Valley in check.  Mark Kimble (Black Sox) came in to finish off the last two innings giving up only one hit.  David Mares (Black Sox) made some unbelievable plays at 2nd base to lead the defense. Dustin Emswyler (Devil Rays) added his own 2-run bomb and played a flawless complete game behind the plate in the sweltering 100 degree heat.  The following REBL All Stars each collected multiple hits on the day:  Brandon Bogges (Pirates), Steve Lopes (Giants), Miguel Lopez (At hletics) and lone American League rep Dave Molidor (A.L. Giants).  Despite a bruising 1st inning the REBL 25+ All Stars never gave up and played hard until the final out leaving two runners on base with the winning run at the plate.

Smokin’ Hot All Star Win

The AL 25+ All Star team came from behind in 105 degree heat to defeat the Tri Valley All Stars on Sunday 5-4. One had the sense that momentum shifted into the favor of the REBL club long before Colby “Cup Cake” Phelps’ 7th inning game winning RBI single.

The contest started out just like a nightmare for the REBL starting pitcher Kevin Kennedy of the A’s. The Tri Valley All Stars began the game with four consecutive base hits and a 3-0 lead. With a runner on first, the number five batter, Lamas, hit a hard grounder up the middle which appeared to be headed to center field for a hit. Fortunately for Kennedy and the AL All Stars, shortstop  Jason “JMash” Masciorini of the Padres ranged far to his left to snag the hard hit grounder, scurried to 2nd and fired to first to complete the double play and earned the “Carl’s Jr. In your face defensive play of the game.”

The REBL’s half of the first began in just the opposite fashion as both Jason Masciorini and Rich Vitali started the game out with weak ground ball outs. That brought to the plate the REBL’s number three hitter, Billy “the kid” Dodson who laid down a beautiful bunt single. The two out bunt hit proved costly for Tri Valley as Adam “Pork chops” Brouch of the Nationals doubled in Dodson on a 3-2 pitch to give the REBL its’ first run.

After the rough first inning start Kennedy settled down and allowed only two more hits and one run over the next three innings, starting with the 2nd inning when he retired the side in order to get the REBL offense back at bat.

Jon “Country” Breidinger of the A’s lead off the 2nd inning with a base hit. “Crazy” Joe Vitali of the Titans curtsey ran for Country and promptly stole second base. Vitali later scored after back to back sacrifice fly’s by Clinton Yeager of the A’s and Colby’s Phelps of the Titans to make the game 3-2 Tri Valley.

The REBL continued its comeback in the 3rd inning when Louie Bruno of the Giants led off the inning with a walk. Keith Lederer of the A’s, who was a perfect 3-3 on the day, followed that with a single which brought up Tony “Tre” Bulleri of the Titans with runners on first and second and none out. Bulleri who was injured (knee) and wasn’t even in the original lineup pleaded with the manager Rich Vitali for an opportunity to hit and delivered with a game tying RBI single. Vitali only inserted Bulleri into the bottom of the lineup after much pre-game lobbying by the Titans All Star catcher and was rewarded with a 2-3 performance (RBI single and a double). Jason Masciorini took his turn to contribute with a run scoring double to make the game 4-3 REBL.

Tri Valley battled back in the 4th when Kennedy allowed a double and run on a sacrifice fly to center which tied the game four apiece.

From that point on the REBL bullpen took over the game and shut out the Tri Valley offense on just two hits over the final five innings. Tony Bulleri relieved Kennedy in the 5th and tossed a hitless shutout inning. In the sixth inning Adam Brouch relieved Bulleri and pitched the final four innings to earn the win.

Joe Vitali started off the 7th inning with a lead off single, stole 2nd and 3rd base and ultimately scored on Colby Phelps two out game winning line single to center. Phelps who entered the game with much controversy quieted critics who had questioned his placement on the squad with a .167 batting average. Phelps delivered from the number eight spot in the lineup and went 1-2 with two RBI’s and a Sac Fly.

This year Phelps’ offensive performance wasn’t quite enough to earn the title of MVP as Adam Brouch claimed that honor slamming the door on the Tri Valley All Stars in the final four innings. Pork chops not only dominated on the mound, but proved to be the team leader with a “give me the ball kick ‘em in the ass attitude.” Before Brouch was busy mowing down the opposing batters, he was on the bench yelling out positioning to the outfielders, and encouragement to the other REBL pitchers. For that and his offensive contribution Brouch is the 2006 AL 25+ All Star MVP.
