2004 NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP The National League Championship series opened up on friday night at Albert's Field. The Giants scored early and often to beat the Firebirds 20-7. The Giants were led by Ron Cincera who drove in six runs by going 4 for 5 with a homerun and two doubles. Steve Lopes also homered for the Giants. Dan Miller had a homerun for the Firebirds. Phil Staehle stuck it out in the lopsided game and threw 8 innings, enabling the Firebirds to save some pitching for the weekend. The Firebirds came back to win game two by a score of 15-6. Jon Abers paced the Firebirds by going 4 for 5 with 6 RBI's. Ray Spradlin and Roy Keegan homered for the Firebirds and Marc Nadale went deep for the Giants. Sunday's decisive game three featured a pitching duel between Guy Yamoka of the Giants and Mike Kuebler of the Firebirds. In the top of the 8th, James Schweizer doubled home two runs to give the Firebirds a 4-2 lead. The Giants would come back with a single run in the bottom of the 8th to make it a 4-3 game. The Firebirds would score 3 more in the top of the ninth on a double by Abers and a triple by Brian Campbell. Tom Byrne would pitch the final two innings to get the win for the Firebirds who won their first championship in only their second year in the league. Jon Abers was voted the MVP of the series by the Firebirds after going 10 for 13 at the plate and catching 3 straight games. |
